16-year-old Lexi Thompson over the weekend became the youngest winner of the LPGA tournament. The teenage golf sensation picked the competition with five-stroke victory on Sunday. The tournament was the Navistar LPGA Classic.
With the feat, Lexi is on course to become a member of the LPGA. However before that happens, there are two more hurdles that she has to clear because she is not yet 18 years. Those stages are called qualifying school but 51-year-old golfer Juli Inkster who became the oldest competitor at the tournament disagrees.
She told reporters that, “She has kind of proven she can play out here. She’s proven she can handle the social part of it. I think they should give her full (membership). It’s kind of silly, isn’t it? I think it makes us (the LPGA) look bad, too. Now, you have to go to qualifying school? To me, that’s silly.”
The commissioner of LPGA doesn’t think so. Mike Whan replied that Lexi will be a member of the association in 2012 if she happens to clear her qualifying rounds.
Lexi finished the tournament with the score of 2-under-70 at the end of the last day of play. She was five strokes above Tiffany Joh who came second when she completed with 17-under-271.
Lex got $195,000 for winning the tournament. She plans to give $20,000 of the amount to charity via the Wounded Project.
